I noticed that the fighters landed the most HP, so I tried three fighters but I still died. Don't remember the other variations, but I just gave up on it after a few more tries. So I bought VII and played that instead.

When I fix my desktop, I'll have to try it again with that lineup.
I don't mean to be insulting your intelligence, but did you properly equip everybody? You start out with enough money to buy everybody weapons and armor in the first town, and it makes a HUGE difference. Fighter, x, White Mage, Black Mage is basically the most balanced party, so it shouldn't be too tough as long as you know the best way to equip yourself. Bad equipment makes this game very excessively difficult.

Now, one of my parties died in the second battle, but that's because it was all thieves.

I'm now at level 15 and have just beaten the Vampire in Terra/Earth Shrine. My warrior and monk destroy everything in sight, and fire 3 is an awesome move. You really do need to level up early on in this game, the forests around Elfheim are great, and I did quite a bit of grinding in the 'Walk of the giants' in Earth Shrine

No worries, you're not insulting my intelligence... just my gameplaying skills (or lack thereof)

I probably didn't equip everybody enough. I was a complete n00b and didn't get familiarized enough with the game... I just dove right in thinking it would be as simple as a Mario game ^^

I'll know what to do with the line up now, though. Thanks to you and everyone else for the starting line up info.

I finished the Earth Shrine last night and now have the airship and class change! After getting class change I tried to do the Volcano, but managed to make it to the boss with only my Knight and Master (with 22hp), both my wizards are dead and I had no potions left or any means of healing. Going to level up a bit again before trying this

I think it's funny that so many people like the FF series but haven't played FF1...it's still my favorite--well, 7 and 12 too, but they are just so different. It's like Negs says, you just level.

From the beginning:

Buy equiment, level, fight garland, go across the bridge, fight the friggin pirate and get the boat, level. Level, level, level, buy the silver sword, get the mystic key...level, level, beat Astos. Level, level, vampire, level, Lich, level level level, get the raft, Ice Cave for the Air ship, level level, Volcano/crazy chick with the arms, level level level level level blah blah blah....level level level level fight all the fiends again then chaos the end.

Anyway, its still my favorite.

I usually went for the Figher, Black Belt/ Thief, Red Mage, White Mage team

I choose Reds over Blacks cause later in the game offensive magic isnt as practical as having a strong hitting team, as you burn through the mp fast with the spells, its just more practical when trawling through a long ass dungeon to have melee that can rip through things rather then a mage whos gonna be useless after 5 or 6 fights.

Reds can melee decently with their swords, can throw out extra heals in emergencys and can use black spells for the occasional magic only enemy - all this makes them superior to the black mage in my view.

Who did you start with?
I had those problems to at first, the NES version is far harder than the GBA version but... Even the NES version can be easy if you prepare, buy items and weapons before you go fight Garland and you'll be fine.

I've gotten pretty far in the NES version but I just can't beat it, to slow and hard... But I'm gonna beat the GBA version for sure. Its not like its a hard game its just kinda long. Still imagine if you were living in 1986 I bet it'd be major fun then.
